The Widcombe Mummers returned to delight their audiences once more on New Year’s Day. Performances started as usual at Widcombe Manor, and this time finished with a new venue, courtesy of the refurbished Parade. The area by the new plane tree to the west provided the ideal setting for all the by now well-known characters, who proved to be on tip-top form – although we may have to deduct some marks from Turkey Snipe (Ben Sandbrook) for over-acting, with a long-drawn-out death which rivalled La Traviata – but not so graceful.
This time a new character joined the team; none other than a down-on-his luck Jeremy Clarkson complete with boxing gloves for dealing with any troublesome producers (r. in picture). He of course was appalled by the slow speed of traffic through the Parade and felt that it could be sorted out by the creation of a one-way system with all west-bound traffic going through the Parade, and all east-bound traffic on Rossiter Rd. He was prepared to put money into such a scheme…. Anyone who feels that it might have merit is free to move without delay to Bathwick.
