These are the talking points from our main committee meeting earlier this week.
Ian Gilchrist
We are sad to inform you that Ian Gilchrist passed away in February. As many of you will know he was a long-time former councillor for Widcombe and a Mayor of the City of Bath. He was an early member of the WA and was the inspiration for the Widcombe Mummers whose band he led. He was a fabulous ambassador for Widcombe and will be missed. Our sympathies are with his wife Gordana and his family. The funeral is being held on Tuesday 8 March 2022. If you would like more details about the funeral, please contact Ian’s son Robby by email at gilchristra@gmail.com
Great Avon River Litter Pick in Widcombe
The first of what is planned to be an annual event, this will take place on Saturday 26 March between 10am and 12 noon and covers the length of the Avon and canal from Limpley Stoke to Newbridge. The WA has agreed to lead the pick on the sections of the river and the canal through Widcombe. The Council will provide the necessary equipment so all we need is a few volunteers. If you are free and would like to help please contact Jeremy Boss on chairman@widcombeassociation.org.uk who will be coordinating on the day.
Cleveland Baths
You will recall the Trust came and spoke to us just before lockdown and the good news is that the Baths will be opening soon. We have been asked to shout out about this, and the crowdfunding they have just launched for finishing touches to the pool. It’s not been open since 1984 so it’s great this will be coming back into use as a heated pool https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/clevelandpools
Redevelopment of the former gas holder site
Consultation on a scheme for the development of this site was the subject of a recent exhibition but, if you missed it, the proposals are still available to view online at www.bathgasworks.com with the opportunity to respond via a questionnaire. There will be a further public consultation in the Spring before an application is submitted. The site is not within our Ward, but it is a prominent location which will be of wider interest. You may wish to consider responding to the current proposals.
Liveable Neighbourhoods
The Council has issued the response to the initial Liveable Neighbourhoods consultation – the link to the Council’s release is Next steps for Liveable Neighbourhoods | Building Control Services | Bath & North East Somerset Council (bathnes.gov.uk) Four trial areas have been identified where design will be undertaken prior to public consultation – One of these trial areas is Church Street together with a pedestrian crossing on Prior Park Road. We are informed that as yet no decision has been taken on where the proposed pedestrian crossing will be nor have any plans been drawn up. There will be further consultation on the options.
Annual General Meeting
Please note that the AGM of Widcombe Association will be on Wednesday 27 April at Widcombe Social Club. Further details to follow – please add it to your diary as we will hopefully be able to meet in person again.
Best wishes
Jeremy Boss and the WA main committee
