Here is our usual monthly round up of some issues and points arising from our last committee meeting:
1. Visit of Tim Warren Tim Warren, Leader of the Council, attended our meeting on 1st March 2016 in our usual venue at the Ring o’ Bells function room. Tim attended as a private individual and not in his official capacity. Apart from the Committee, eight other WA members also attended the meeting. Among the subjects discussed were:
Railway electrification, especially the design of pylons and the clearance of vegetation,
Concerns raised in the WA review of the Rossiter Road scheme, in particular the pedestrian crossings at the White Hart junction.
The state of the Churchill Bridge subway, which has recently been flooded,
The problem of seagulls and rubbish and how the Council intends to tackle this.
Tim’s response to the concerns and issues raised by both the committee and the attending members was very positive and he said that he welcomed the opportunity to talk to WA at first hand.
2. AGM This will be held on Thursday April 21st at 7.30pm in the new Social Club. This year we are planning something a bit different, so, after a brief meeting to cover the business of the AGM, we will open up to a community event to showcase various groups and activities that happen in Widcombe. This will also be a great opportunity for people to see the new Widcombe Social Club shortly after its opening, so put the date in your diary!
3. Widcombe Magazine Your copy of our brand new ‘Widcombe Magazine’ will be delivered to you early in April. This will be less of a newsletter and more of a magazine covering a variety of aspects of life in Widcombe as well as up-dating you on the work of WA. We hope it will appeal to both WA members and those residents who are not part of the Association.
4. Events Our events committee has an extensive and exciting programme planned. I would like to draw your attention to just a couple of events. The next Garden Club meeting, “Gardens on a Hill”, will take place on Wednesday March 16th at 7.30pm at Prior Park Garden Centre and, on Saturday April 2nd, Dr David Goode will be leading a Nature Walk around Widcombe starting at 10.00am. There are also plans to set up a new Walking Group, a great way to get some exercise and socialise at the same time!
For more details of these and other events see our website
Do send me your thoughts, ideas and comments on these or any other issues, and, where appropriate, I will pass them on to the relevant committee member.
Regards,
Liz Littlewood (Secretary)
