There is no Widcombe Association committee meeting in August, but there are still a number of topics which may be of interest to members.
Boundary Stones of Widcombe History Walk
The walk on 12 August has sold out. If anyone who has booked cannot make it, please let Clare Furlonger know as there is a waiting list- email: cfurlonger@gmail.com. We will consider organising another Boundary Stones walk for WA members and guests at a later date.
Changes in Widcombe Parade
There are a few changes in Widcombe Parade, two good and one not so good.
The good news is that Larkhall Butchers are re-opening from 19 August. Their intention is to open from Wednesday to Saturday each week. The shop will be managed by Hannah, a fully trained butcher.
Also new to Widcombe – I Hear, Ear Wax Removal Service, with Dr Virginia Collis (Hearing Aid Audiologist with over 10 years experience in ear wax removal), available at Widcombe Surgery every Wednesday by appointment (home visits too where required) contact: Tel 07517 400893 (phone/text/WhatsApp) or email drvirginiacollis@icloud.com.
The not-so-good news is that the AGA shop in the Parade has closed. Whilst clearly catering for a wider population than just Widcombe, as a destination shop it brought people into the Parade who would otherwise not have come here, and thus benefitting other businesses.
Problems in Widcombe Parade
As you may have witnessed, the Parade has become a focus for a number of people who are not in work and/or are homeless. There has been evidence of drinking and there have been a number incidents of harassment. The police have been informed and a meeting has been held with the charity Developing Health and Independence (DHI), based in Bath. The charity works with people on the streets and helps them to find shelter and to bring about positive change in their lives. Our two Councillors are also aware of the problem. We are asked by the professionals working to help those on the street to not to give money directly to them, but to make donations to Julian House.
Claverton Down Flower and Produce Show
The annual Claverton Down Flower and Produce Show is taking place on Saturday 2 September in the Claverton Down Community Hall and Marquee from 2pm to 5pm. The Claverton and District Horticultural Society is a business member of the Widcombe Association.
Best wishes
Mike Wrigley, Chairman, and the main WA committee
