What a day it was!
After almost a year of traffic misery and delays to the works on the Rossiter Rd scheme it was touch and go: would the traffic scheme be complete in time for the street party and would we really have something to celebrate on June 7th? The answer to the second question was a resounding ‘yes’ – we knew there was still much work to be done to the west of the Parade, but the removal of through traffic on the Friday before the party was a great boost to morale, and people turned out in their hundreds (thousands?) to celebrate.
This Widcombe Association event, brilliantly organised by Chris Rogers, was Widcombe’s way of celebrating not only our new Village street, but the ever more cohesive and welcoming Widcombe Community. Everyone mucked in on the day: Traders, Churches, Schools, pubs and restaurants. Once again Widcombe welcomed the world to the unique place in which we live with a feast of entertainment, food, drink, exhibitions and happenings.
As was only fitting, the event was officially opened by Lady Margaret, who shared a platform with our newly-elected MP forBath, Ben Howlett, and seemed to have some difficulty in establishing exactly who he was – probably because her ladyship normally deals solely with royalty. Ben revealed that he islooking for a house in Widcombe – and who can blame him.
