The Abbey Cemetery - Recording Inscriptions
By Dr Phil Bendall
Since 2006 the Widcombe Association's Cemetery Action Group and B&NES Council, with the assistance of many energetic volunteers, have made great strides in tidying up Bath Abbey Cemetery.
Background Information
Layout
The site covers 2ha (5 acres), and overlooks the town to the north with a view of the Abbey's tower and, beyond that, Lansdown. The cemetery is laid out along a major axis from the chapel of rest at the summit to the lower end of the cemetery in an almost south to north alignment with the main path running along this. Over its approximately 225m length, the height drops by 20m. The individual sections are numbered as in the sketch below . The major axis is crossed by a wide, curving path.

Originally there were intended to be 8 sections with, on the lower part to the north and east, a garden. Section 8, to the west of the chapel, was never developed although there are some graves bordering it. The north-western part of the garden was used for burials from about 1980. Sections 5 and 6 now form a single unit as a result of the path that separated them being used for burials in the 1940s.

The Challenge
The main problems arose from the uncontrolled growth of:
- Ivy
- Rosebay Willow-herb
- Laurel
- Small trees
The ivy had smothered a number of headstones to the extent that they appear as small trees. In one instance a 2.5 metre high 'tree' covered a 1 metre high tomb.
Rosebay Willow-herb ( Epilobium angustifolium ) grows in swathes to a height of about 1.5 - 2 metres, flowering in June-September. It's a hardy perennial and, spreading by rhizomes as well as seed, develops into large patches which are difficult to remove. In Section 1 the border on the western side was completely covered with this weed and in August 2006 a tidying session managed to remove this to reveal the graves. In 2007 in an area in this border which hadn't been mown by the Council, the weed has appeared where it wasn't growing the previous August. Brambles only occur in a small number of places, at least in sections 1, 2 and 3.
There are a number of sites where trees have started to grow between graves. It is evident that some of these have been cut back in the past.
Laurel bushes grow on the western borders of the cemetery. These bushes were so large that they obscured some graves completely; some graves were over 3 metres behind the existing edge of the border. Work by the group and also by the Council has trimmed these on the western borders of section 3 and 5.
There was a problem with some types of bramble, in particular the Himalayan giant bramble ( Rubus armeniacus ) which was growing in all sections of the cemetery. Evidence remains that there was a programme to remove these plants and a rectangular area in Section 7 had the remains of these.
As for the gravestones, their condition varies widely. The most resilient seem to be the granite ones and the least those of sandstone with various headstones of this material suffering from delamination . There are also examples of slate slabs with fine inscriptions which are in excellent condition. Marble tombs are, for the most part, discoloured having turned grey or black. On one example, one side was so dark that it wasn't clear that there was an inscription and it was only an inscription on another part that implied that something must be there and careful cleaning revealed it.
The annual strimming of the site by the Council makes a remarkable difference to the state of the cemetery which, during the summer, resembles a hay field due to the growth of the grass on and between the graves.
Documentation
Research was carried out on the individuals mentioned on the monumental inscriptions ( MIs ). The main purpose of this was to confirm the dates, particularly where the inscription was damaged or incomplete, and to reduce, as far as possible, transcription errors. Some MIs omit the age and, in these cases, the work attempts to establish the year of birth.
In addition Bath Abbey kindly gave access to the burial registers which contain the information on all those buried, not just those with memorials. These registers give more information than conventional registers and include the plot location and the fees paid. The index now lists all those buried.
Here are some charts detailing statistics for age at death and occupation of those buried, where these have been determined. One can see at a glance for example that most of those recorded died in their 70s and that 15% belonged to the professions.

Postscript
The final session of the working party was held on the afternoon of Sat 5 Jul 2008. The remaining graves were tidied to the accompaniment of the Widcombe Wobblers, a local folk band. This was followed by a tour of the cemetery given by Phil Bendall and Brenda Beeton who gave a history of the cemetery and a selection of its more interesting and colourful occupants. A presentation was made by Richard Wales, on behalf of the Widcombe Association's Committee, to Brenda Beeton for organising the work.
Since then data from the memorial inscriptions have been collated in limited-edition bound volumes. The information, complete with index, is also available on an attractive CD-ROM which can be obtained by Emailing the WA secretary. The pages from the volumes can be viewed as PDF files in Adobe Acrobat. The cost of the CD-ROM is £10 (plus £1.50 P & P).
The following appeared in The Bath Chronicle (17 Jul 2008 p18): An 18-month project to tidy up a 19th century cemetery has been completed - after 1,000 hours of work by volunteers. The last working party organised by the Widcombe Association at the Bath Abbey Cemetery, Prior Park, was accompanied by music played by local band the Widcombe Wobblers. There was a tour of newly-revealed memorials and the afternoon concluded with a champagne tea. The work started because the cemetery had become overgrown, despite Bath and North East Somerset Council mowing the paths every few weeks during the summer and performing an annual strimming . Ivy had grown so much that some crosses had become top- heavy and had been blown over in gales. Over the past 18 months, volunteers put in more than 1,000 hours of effort to remove undergrowth and catalogue the memorials. The cemetery, which opened in 1844, was designed by landscape architect John Claudius Loudon, who also designed cemeteries at Cambridge and Southampton. There was around one burial a week in the 19th century but over time this figure dropped to fewer than five a year. The abbey authorities closed the cemetery in the mid-1990s, although families who already have plots can still arrange burials there. The five-acre cemetery has 2,000 graves which house a total of 4,000 people. To help people find their relatives' graves, volunteers have copied the memorial inscriptions, photographed headstones, produced maps and checked dates. The association is going to distribute the information to the council, the abbey and some libraries to allow family historians to access the information. Among those buried at the cemetery are men who served in the Peninsular War, at Waterloo and Trafalgar, during the Indian Mutiny, the Crimean War, the Boer War and the First and Second World Wars. There are bishops, admirals, lords, slave owners, actors, dancing masters, and private governesses, as well as members of the colonial civil service, clergy and missionaries who served around the world. Brenda Beeton , who led the volunteers, said: "We hope our work has made the cemetery more accessible to everyone. It is a lovely, peaceful place to explore and the views are wonderful." For those wanting to explore the cemetery, the association has produced a Tombstone Trail leaflet, which is available from Prior Park Garden Centre.
