Widcombe Mummers - 1st January 2008

The Widcombe Mummers rode again on New Year’s Day 2008 with a new script, with the Widcombe Wobblers providing the music. The Mummers processed through the streets and performed at Widcombe Manor, Prior Park Garden Centre and Widcombe Crescent. The charity collection was donated to St Matthew’s to help with their repairs. Photos here

Social Events 2007

On Saturday 9th June, Widcombe residents and many local dignitaries departed from Ferry Lane and followed the route of the Widcombe Boundary Stones to the top of Widcombe Hill, thence to the Paragon School, and finally via Alexandra Park to South Quays, and home along the river. The Natural Theatre Company were magnificent; Lady Margaret surpassed herself and appeared in five different frocks during the day. Our Community Service Officer, David Hall, joined our procession but stayed with us for most of the way, easing our road crossings. A Routemaster bus (sponsored by Peter Hendy) plied up and down the hills for people avoiding the whole tour, and was manned by Mayor's Guides, providing commentary. A picnic at Paragon School, organised by St Thomas à Becket Church, raised funds for work to the churches, while Widcombe Juniors provided a closing party with entertainment by their band, and demonstration by their robotics team.

For the event we produced a quality leaflet with a map of Widcombe, directions and historical notes. It is still available at the garden centre, priced £1.00. We tried to include all the footpaths in Widcombe, so this map will become a very useful resource, which we will be able to use as a basis for other ventures in future years.

You can see a digital copy of the leaflet here:

At Christmas 2007, we presented a concert by “A Handful of Singers” in St Matthew’s Church, after The Natural Theatre Company switched on the Widcombe Christmas lights.
